World War II
The Home Front Chronicles
Volume 2
For a small taste of this great DVD,
watch the preview below.
WW II: The Home Front Chronicles is an 8 DVD set that spans the years
1941 to 1945. From the opening 1941 documentary film Ring of Steel, which is
narrated by Spencer Tracy to the last film, Combat America (1945) narrated
by Clark Gable (and in many scenes too) you get the sense and feel of what
the American people were going through, the love for this country, the
pride, and yes, fear for the young men and women putting their lives on the
line.
However, there is a feeling throughout all the films that America would
prevail, we would win no matter what it took. That is the America, and the
people I will always remember and be thankful to. It makes me not only stand
a bit taller, but also proud to be an American. To see the sacrifices
our parents, grandparents and those still living from this greatest
generation went through, is humbling. Personally I think we have lost this
feeling, but then again that is just my opinion and what is so nice is that
I can be free to have an opinion. Thanks to them. Enjoy and watch the people
that made this country the great one it is today!
This series is mainly concerned with how the folks stateside supported
those overseas, their contribution and sacrifices and how they were an
integral part of the war effort.
Volume 2 runs over an hour.
The 1942 movie, World at War, is a very well put together history
of the portrayal of the steps that led up to Pearl Harbor and total
mobilization of World War II. Lots of amazing footage. While not strictly
about the American Home Front, it is a very important look at the times and
how they eventually came to influence the direction and activities of those
here in the United States. This is one of the best pieces on the early war
period I've seen and as such, I highly recommend it. The foundation it lays
helps explain some of the actions this country took during the war. 43:19
1943
Wartime Nutrition is an excellent 1943 historic film showing civilian
suggestions to maintaining good health with good eating habits. Americans
helping the Europeans rations their food properly, in addition to discussing
the wonderful things that can be done by everyone with food rations. 10:21
Similar to many other World War II-era films, Conquer by the Clock
(1943) equates patriotism with productivity, and encourages American workers
to make the best possible use of their time in a war where industrial
production and combat are synchronized on an international level. Lots of
guilt provoking messages here, workers are told not to waste time, but to be
sure and just concentrate on work all day long, or else. Lots of great
factory shots and we see instances of how important it is to work, work,
work. During this time patriotism required universal, compulsory
mobilization of bodies and time. Here allegiance means work rather than
words.10:40
