World War II
The Home Front Chronicles
Volume 5
For a small taste of this great DVD,
watch the preview below.
WW II: The Home Front Chronicles is an 8 DVD set that spans the years
1941 to 1945. From the opening 1941 documentary film Ring of Steel, which is
narrated by Spencer Tracy to the last film, Combat America (1945) narrated
by Clark Gable (and in many scenes too) you get the sense and feel of what
the American people were going through, the love for this country, the
pride, and yes, fear for the young men and women putting their lives on the
line.
However, there is a feeling throughout all the films that America would
prevail, we would win no matter what it took. That is the America, and the
people I will always remember and be thankful to. It makes me not only stand
a bit taller, but also proud to be an American. To see the sacrifices
our parents, grandparents and those still living from this greatest
generation went through, is humbling. Personally I think we have lost this
feeling, but then again that is just my opinion and what is so nice is that
I can be free to have an opinion. Thanks to them. Enjoy and watch the people
that made this country the great one it is today!
This series is mainly concerned with how the folks stateside supported
those overseas, their contribution and sacrifices and how they were an
integral part of the war effort.
Volume 5 runs over an hour.
The Curtiss-Wright Shorts (7 Subjects) from 1944, are those
interesting short screen ads recruiting workers for aircraft manufacturing
during World War II. Lowell Thomas narrates the
first 3 ads. 8:58
The 1944 film, These People shows a Frigidaire plant being converted
for military production during World War II, along with the workers who
helped make the war parts to help us fight the war. 15:08
The 1944 film, Freedom Comes High, follows Steve, played by James
Craig, and Ellen, played by Barbara Britton, and is not only excellently
acted but also very melodramatic. It focuses on Steve’s enlistment in the US
Navy during WW II. It shows a married couple being separated by the war and
the sacrifices that had to be made by so many. A very highly recommended
film. 12:29
The 1944 film, Every Minute Counts is about balancing work and family
in a time of heightened mobilization. With so many people helping the war
effect, especially woman, they found themselves having a difficult time
balancing home and family duties against the necessity to report to work on
time and work regular hours. We see how the supervisor, Hal Findlay
overcomes these issues. 10:13
The causes and recurring problems of juvenile delinquency is the focus in
the 1944 film, That Boy Joe. There are many factors examined in this
fine movie, not the least of which is the underlying backdrop of the war.
